Stock of Apple’s most affordable iPad model is running low at retail stores and online, suggesting a rumored refresh of the entry-level tablet is near.
Apple.com has very limited iPad availability. Nearly all configurations are experiencing significant delays in delivery times. Spot checks conducted by AppleInsider confirm the device is in low supply across the U.S. and many major markets including China, Japan and the UK.
The delivery dates for Space Gray and Gold iPad variants have been pushed back to Oct. 7 and October 14. This delay applies to all connectivity configurations except for the 32GB Wi Fi + Cellular Space Gray model, which ships between Sept. 29-Oct. 6 in the U.S.
The supply of silver iPad models is also rapidly decreasing, but some brick-and mortar Apple Stores still have limited stock.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple instructed retail employees to “not speculate” about the reason for the shortage of iPad availability. Gurman tweeted Tuesday that Apple had informed them. He goes on to reiterate a recent report claiming the tablet line will be refreshed with a faster processor and thinner chassis before year’s end.
Apple last updated iPad in September 2020, when the education-focused device received an A12 Bionic processor. Retina’s 10.2-inch non-laminated display, Lightning connectivity and Touch ID were all carried over from the predecessor.
Apple will also unveil a highly anticipated iPad mini redesign, with thinner bezels. It may also switch to Face ID prior to 2022. However, the current version of the tablet that is pint-sized is still available on Apple’s website.

Although inventory is slipping, there are still iPad deals available on the 10.2-inch models at Apple resellers. At press time, shoppers can save $20 on this Wi-Fi + Cellular model.
