Apple wasn’t the only digital storefront to offer Netflix a deal to keep the streaming service using the App Store payment system, as Google apparently offered to take a lower cut from Android-based subscriptions.
Apple’s trial against Epic revealed that Apple tried to prevent Netflix from removing their subscription option from the iOS App by offering better terms. It was revealed that the search company also had the same problem in an unresolved consumer lawsuit against Google.
According to The Verge, a document from the class-action lawsuit alleges that major services like Netflix, Spotify, Tinder, and YouTube wanted to bypass Google Play Billing. Netflix would prefer to use an alternative payment system. The complaint claims that Google offered to reduce Netflix’s revenue share in an effort to please the video streaming service.
Although the lawsuit doesn’t provide much detail, it indicates that Google experienced the same growing pains with Netflix as Apple.
The Epic lawsuit reveals that Apple tried to negotiate with Netflix. This included offering an Apple TV bundle, performance data for Netflix, email promotions by Apple and membership to a “video partnership program.”
It seems that attempts by Netflix to directly collect credit card details from Android users rather than using Google’s payment system led to a “clarification” to developers requiring Play Store apps to use Google’s transaction service.
Further statements are included in the complaint echoing Apple’s lawsuit. It claims that the standard Play Store commission of 30% was too high and could be reduced. According to internal Google communications, the Ply Store could make ends meet with a 6% fee and that it has no other reason than copying Apple.
