Korea EV component makers in Talks with Apple about ‘Apple Car’

Apple has contacted several Korean electric vehicle component manufacturers to develop its “Apple Car” project.

The Korea Times reported Monday that Apple is in discussions with Korean EV manufacturers to help it outsource manufacturing of the first-party electric car.

A source claims that Apple is seeking business partners in Korea to expand its electric vehicle business.

Apple cannot complete its EV business plan if it doesn’t have partnerships with Korean vendors.

According to the report, Apple “advanced discussions” with SK Innovation (a subsidiary SK Group specializing in EV batteries) and met with LG Electronics Magna International, an automotive parts manufacturer. They formed a joint venture, LG Magna e-Powertrain.

Apple may consider replacing its lithium-ion lithium-ion battery with a lithium-iron phosphate, LFP.

LFP batteries, however, are not currently made by any Korean manufacturer. However, industry sources suggest that Apple will work with a Chinese manufacturer to produce the technology.

The Korea Times claims that the dispute between Apple and China could make the U.S. an important region for manufacturing lines. SK Innovation, LG Energy Solution, and LG Energy Solution are just two American companies that have built or are currently creating batteries. Samsung says it is looking into the matter.

Apple is believed to be approaching Korean automakers to establish an “Apple Car” partnership.

Apple was “very close” to signing an “Apple Car partnership arrangement with Magna and LG in 2021. Apple first approached Magna during the development of its self-driving car.
