Formula One pilot Sebastian Vettel chases thieves using the iPhone’s Find My app

Find My from Apple allows customers to track the position of their devices as well as anything else associated with an airtag.

While we’ve heard several instances about individuals recovering lost or stolen belongings using this function, this one features none other than German Formula One driver Sebastian Vettel, who used the Find My app to track down burglars.

Vettel’s suitcase was stolen outside a hotel in Barcelona, Spain, according to the BBC. Vettel, on the other hand, had a different plan than heading straight to the cops. On his iPhone, the racer used Apple’s Find My app to track the whereabouts of his backpack in real-time.

This was made possible, according to a Vettel representative, not because of an AirTag, but because Vettel had to Find My compatible headphones (probably AirPods) in his stolen luggage.

Unfortunately, despite the chase, it appears that the burglars were aware that the Find My app can monitor AirPods, so they tossed the earphones on the street and fled with the bag and what was inside. Vettel recovered his earbuds and called the cops to report the incident.

A bag belonging to Sebastian Vettel was stolen in Barcelona this morning. He tried to find it by using his iPhone to track his earphones which were in his bag, but when he located his earphones he found them abandoned and was therefore unable to locate his stolen bag.

Quick update: In case you’re not familiar with it, Formula One racers are also known as “pilots.”

Find My app to the rescue

Even if your third-generation AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max isn’t near your iPhone, you can use the Find My app to find them.

Because they function with the same Find My Network as iOS devices, Macs, and AirTags, they’re compatible.

A guy was able to trace his luggage that had been misplaced by an airline earlier this year and reclaim it using an AirTag.

There’s also the case of a stolen vehicle in Texas that was discovered thanks to an AirTag placed inside. Of course, not every tale has a good conclusion, but it’s exciting to see what these tools can do.
