Apple announced intentions to enhance Apple Maps’ routing capabilities for electric vehicles at the 2020 WWDC.

This functionality appears to have been stealthily sent out as part of iOS 15.4 for Ford users this week, and Ford has already produced a new support page outlining how Mach-E drivers may take advantage of it.

This capability is only available via CarPlay, Apple’s in-car infotainment system that is compatible with the Mach-E and a large number of other vehicles on the market today.

Ford notes that Mach-E owners may activate EV routing in Apple Maps using the Apple Maps interface in the CarPlay interface.

Ford notes that all you need to do is connect your iPhone to your Mach-E and activate CarPlay as usual, then use Apple Maps to pick a route.

Your Mach-E should then urge you to configure EV routing on your iPhone running iOS 15.4 using the Apple Maps app.

Once you activate EV routing in Apple Maps on your iPhone, the capability is enabled for all routes accessed using Apple Maps via CarPlay.

When you build new map routes, the anticipated battery charge remaining in the car at the conclusion of the trip is displayed. If you’re going to need to stop and charge along the way, Apple Maps will incorporate those stops as well (s).

Currently, this technology is available only on the Mustang Mach-E, but Ford says it aims to expand support to its F-150 Lightning and E-Transit vehicles in the future. Ford provides further information on compatibility:

Ford says that this capability will be available on 2021 Mustang Mach-Es with different software updates later in 2022.

Additionally, the business notes that the battery level in Apple Maps will update only when the iPhone is connected to the Mach-E through CarPlay:

Ford collaborated with Apple to create vehicle-to-device connectivity. The battery level, on the other hand, will be updated only when the Apple device is connected to the Mustang Mach-E via CarPlay.

You may discover more about this new function immediately by visiting Ford’s website.

As of currently, only Ford and some BMW vehicles are compatible with Apple Maps EV routing.
