Many of the worries about upgrading to Windows 10 have to do with how well it will work with the computer at first.
You can run a Windows compatibility checker before committing to an upgrade if the program doesn’t do it automatically when you start it. Here’s how to make a manual…
Here’s how a manual check works:
The prompt for commands
In your version of Windows, you can open a command prompt from the Start menu. When that command prompt brings up a form with white text on a black screen, type this command:
schtasks.exe /Run /TN “MicrosoftWindowsApplication ExperienceMicrosoft Compatibility Appraiser”
Press Enter once you have typed this command.
Your Time to Wait
A full scan with the compatibility appraiser can take up to 15 minutes. If your computer can’t run Windows 10, you will see a different message on the screen with the following heading:
“Windows 10 won’t work on this computer.”
Under that headline, you should see a list of the most important problems that are stopping Windows 10 from working on your computer. Here are some of the main reasons why Windows 10 won’t work on your computer:
- Windows 10 doesn’t work with the CPU you have.
- Windows 10 does not work with the Parallels Display Adapter.
- Windows 10 does not work with SVGA 3-D from VMware.
- The Windows 10 appraiser may give you trouble if you have a chip from the Mobile Inter (R) 945 Express Chipset Family.
How to Fix Problems With Not Working Together
Most incompatibility problems can be fixed by installing an older version of Windows that is currently eligible for an upgrade. Most of the time, both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will work for you.
If your CPU is too old for either of these operating systems, likely, you won’t meet the requirements for Windows 10. In this case, you might need to get new hardware for your computer.
System Requirements for Windows 10
Here is a short list of what you will need to run Windows 10. As was already said, you should be fine if your computer can run Windows 8.1.
- 1 GHz processor or faster
- 1 GB of RAM that is 32-bit or 2 GB of RAM that is 64-bit.
- 16 GB of free space on the hard drive
- A Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with a WDDM driver graphics card, Internet access, and a Microsoft account, especially if you want to use the Windows store or run apps on your hardware.
- If you are running Windows 8.1, a full install of the Windows 8.1 update.
If you make major changes to your system, you may need to run the compatibility appraiser again for it to show your real Windows 10 results. But all you have to do is follow the steps above until they are all done.
