In the past several years, VS Code has become widely used in the programming community. Nearly half of the developers polled in 2019 said VS Code was their go-to IDE. And since then, I think it’s safe to believe that figure has only increased.
The ability to set up a portable version of VS Code is only one of the many impressive capabilities that come standard with VS Code. Let’s check out how to put Visual Studio Code on a USB drive.
How to Install VS Code on a Flash Drive?
It may be beneficial to bring your preferred editor with you if you are a developer who frequently switches between a laptop and a desktop.
Moving to a new machine and having to redo all of the work you put into getting VS Code set up exactly right would be a major pain. Fortunately, VS Code can be set up on a USB drive without any trouble.
- Download the. ZIP or .TAR.GZ version of VS Code
There will be no User or System-level changes made when installing the compressed version of Visual Studio Code.
If you’re using Windows or macOS, use the.ZIP format, and if you’re using Linux, use the TAR.GZ format. Click here to download.
2. Extract the. ZIP or .TAR.GZ
3. Copy the extracted files to your Flash Drive
4. Inside the extracted folder, create a folder called “data“
This folder will hold all of your install preferences and can be moved between different install preferences.
5. Open Code.exe to run VS Code
The process is as easy as it sounds. You can now take your VS Code installation with you and have it function perfectly on any computer.
To update the installation, you must first download the new files and then unzip/overwrite the existing ones on your flash drive.
Can Visual Studio Code be downloaded to cloud storage services like Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft One Drive?
When generating a portable version of Visual Studio Code, installing it in a cloud storage service like Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive is a common practice.
There has been a recent uptick in the number of developers opting for this technique over flash drives.
Simply put the contents of the zip file into your synchronized folder and follow the same installation procedures as with the flash drive. This method is compatible with any system.
